Government agencies have different ways of grouping the states based on geography, culture, or other factors. We compiled several maps that show the different ways US states are grouped into regions. There's the Northeast …. But that's not the only way to divide up the country. Several federal agencies use this map of the 10 "Standard Federal Regions" drawn up by the Office of Management and Budget. No one said regions had to be culturally similar.
Time zones count too, and the US is divided into six of them. Lastly, the Petroleum Administration for Defense uses this map of five regions, originally drawn up in to ration the country's gasoline.
Snow falls during the winter as the temperatures are regularly below freezing. Major geographical areas of the region include the Appalachian Mountains, Atlantic Ocean, Great Lakes and the border with Canada to the north.

The climate includes cold winters and warm summers and the precipitation varies from year to year with much of the winter precipitation in the form of snow. Much of the economy is based on commercial farming and cattle ranching. Segregation is no longer officially practiced in places like schools in the south, but the region was once famous for dividing its restaurants, educational institutions, and other public places between blacks and whites, prohibiting blacks from attending or being served.
This type of unequal treatment also happened in other regions of the country but was most pronounced in the south. Segregation by race was practiced well into the s, until the Civil Rights Act was signed in , as a culmination of the efforts of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. This act outlawed discrimination, yet the practice still continues in various ways. Each region of the US has a distinct flavor, culture, and history. It is the diversity of the US that makes it rich in spirit, as well as economic gain.
